Conclusion Manchester United - Newcastle

Hosts can make a statement on Ronaldo return

Cristiano Ronaldo is in line for his second Manchester United debut when Newcastle visit Old Trafford on Saturday and I’m expecting a comfortable win for the hosts in this one.

It remains to be seen whether or not Ronaldo will go straight into the starting XI, with the international break and then a period of isolation due to Covid rules meaning he hasn’t had much time with his new team-mates, but the man himself has said he is “ready to go” and he could be set for a starting spot on Saturday despite the quick turnaround.

Even if he isn’t involved from the off Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men should have too much quality for a Newcastle side who have been leaking goals in these early stages of the campaign.

Man United can win with room to spare

The Red Devils have seven points to show from three games so far but they’ve only played one game at Old Trafford.  United kicked off the campaign with a 5-1 demolition of Leeds in their opener and should be able to beat Newcastle by a big margin this weekend.

The Magpies have just one point to show from their three games so far and worryingly for boss Steve Bruce have been particularly porous at the back, conceding eight goals in the league so far.  This is a big occasion for the hosts as they welcome back Ronaldo 12 years after he left for Real Madrid, and I’m expecting them to make a real statement here and am backing the home side to win with a -2 handicap as my main bet.

A Greenwood goal has potential

Ronaldo may well score on his debut but there isn’t a great deal of value in backing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner here, particularly as there is a chance he may not make the first XI.  One man who does stand out is rising star Mason Greenwood, who has scored a goal in each of United’s three Premier League games so far.
