The UEFA Champions League is widely considered to be the highest form of European club football, and in truth, it’s hard to argue with that kind of logic. In its current incarnation it has been around since 1992 when a rebranding took place, although the actual history of the Champions League dates all the way back to 1955.
The winner of the competition currently qualifies for the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
At this time the qualification period begins in late June, which leads on to four rounds before a play-off round which determines the final 32 teams. There are then eight groups of four that play one another in the group stages, with 16 qualifying for the knockout stages. Eventually, the teams are dwindled down to just two, who will then battle it out in the final for the right to be called the Champions of Europe.
The following teams qualified for the 2020/21 Champions League group stage…
Group A: Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, Salzburg, Lokomotiv Moskva
Group B: Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Borussia Mönchengladbach
Group C: Porto, Manchester City, Olympiacos, Marseille
Group D: Liverpool, Ajax, Atalanta, Midtjylland
Group E: Sevilla, Chelsea, Krasnodar, Rennes
Group F: Zenit, Borussia Dortmund, Lazio, Club Brugge
Group G: Juventus, Barcelona, Dynamo Kyiv, Ferencváros
Group H: PSG, Manchester United, Leipzig, İstanbul Başakşehir
The group stage runs from 20 October to 9 December 2020. The dates for the knock-out rounds are as follows:
16, 17, 23, 24 February 2021 – Round of 16, 1st leg
9, 10, 16, 17 March – Round of 16, 2nd leg
6, 7 April – Quarter-finals, 1st leg
13, 14 April – Quarter-finals, 2nd leg
27, 28 April – Semi-finals, 1st leg
4, 5 May – Semi-finals, 2nd leg
Real Madrid have won the Champions League most often with 13 wins. They are followed by AC Milan on 7 wins, while Liverpool and Bayern Munich have both won the competition 6 times.
