Key points Crystal Palace - Aston Villa
Conclusion Crystal Palace - Aston Villa
Gerrard’s Villa face Palace test
Steven Gerrard kicked off his stint as Aston Villa boss with a home win over Brighton but backing that up with another three points at Crystal Palace on Saturday looks a big ask.
The Eagles have been in fine form themselves and are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games, while they are yet to be beaten at Selhurst Park this season.
Going for a result in this match-up is a tricky task given that we’re not quite sure what to expect from Gerrard’s Villa, who were clearly underperforming prior to his arrival, but both teams to score does stand out.
Back both teams to find the back of the net
Palace may be unbeaten in seven games but they have drawn five of those matches, and both teams have scored in each of those five stalemates.
Villa kept a clean sheet in their win over Brighton but conceded in their five previous games, all of which were defeats, and both teams have scored in four of their last six games.
Both teams scored in the corresponding fixture last season, a 3-2 win for Palace in May, and there have been goals at both ends in three of their last four home games so we may well see both keepers beaten at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
Spoils could be shared in South London
Palace are the Premier League’s draw specialists with seven of their 12 games ending all square so far. Only one of Villa’s games has ended honours even, but they are at the start of a new era so going on their previous performances may not be the best way to go about a correct score prediction here.
Gerrard’s first task was to stop the rot after taking a charge of a team who had lost five games in a row and he managed that with a win over Albion. The former Rangers manager will now be looking to build some momentum and a point against a Palace side yet to be beaten at home would have to be considered a positive result.
Palace are just three points ahead of Villa in the standings and with little to separate these two we could be in line for a draw here, with an entertaining 2-2 result looking a good option at a big price in the correct score market. Three of the hosts’ seven draws have been 2-2 – and they played out a 3-3 draw with Burnley last weekend.
