Conclusion Newcastle - West Ham

Newcastle set for more of the same

Back in the depths of winter Newcastle’s clash with Fulham on the final day of the Premier League season looked like it could turn out to be a crucial and dramatic relegation decider, but Steve Bruce managed to turn things around at St James’ Park and in the end it was done and dusted well before the campaign ended.

The Magpies ended up in 12th position in the table, some 17 points clear of final day opponents Fulham after their 2-0 win at Craven Cottage. They lost just two of their final nine league games, but Newcastle fans are understandably lacking optimism heading into the new season.

Steve Bruce remains a largely unpopular figure with the fanbase and Mike Ashley even more so. The permanent signing of Joe Willock, when completed, will be a fine piece of business but apart from that it’s been all silent in the north east.

Moyes looks to build on Hammers success

West Ham, on the other hand, are having the time of their lives after a sixth-place finish last term. David Moyes led the Hammers to their best Premier League finish since 1998/99 and will be hoping to build on such an unexpected success.

I’m not expecting a repeat, however. Their transfer window has been uninspiring to say the least and I get the feeling that last season was something of an anomaly, but they still have more than enough quality to take points off Newcastle.

Goals expected at St James’ Park

What we can expect, all being well, is a surprisingly entertaining game on Sunday. West Ham only kept one clean sheet in their final 11 league games last term and that came at home to Southampton. Away from home they saw both teams score in each of their last five top-flight fixtures and they face a Newcastle side that scored ten goals in their final four matches.

Callum Wilson was responsible for two of those goals – a brace in his final appearance of the season against Leicester – and I expect him to open his account for the new season on Saturday. The 29-year-old is without a doubt the Magpies’ main attacking threat and he had a direct hand in 17 of their league goals last season, despite only starting 23 matches.

I do think West Ham can get the win at St James’ Park, though. Newcastle have a tendency to start the season slowly – they have lost three of their last four opening fixtures – and West Ham won three of their final five league away games last term so a 2-1 correct score prediction is my preference.
