Conclusion Monaco - Nantes

Monaco can kick off new season in style

The French Ligue 1 campaign kicks off this weekend with Monaco up against Nantes on Friday night to open the first round of fixtures.

This will be Monaco’s second fixture of the season after a 2-0 midweek win at Sparta Prague in Champions League qualifying, and we feel they can back up that success by taking three points in their first domestic outing.

Nantes avoided dropping out of the top flight by the narrowest of margins last season as they triumphed over Toulouse in the relegation play-off by virtue of the now abolished away goals rule.

La Maison Jaune could be in for another tough season after a quiet summer in the transfer market, with keeper Alban Lafont their only significant capture.

Monaco have also been quiet in the transfer window but have managed to keep what was a strong squad intact going into Niko Kovac’s first season in charge.  In Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland, Les Monegasques have excellent attacking options and should have too much firepower for the visitors at the Stade Louis II.

ASM did the double over Nantes last season, winning both games 2-1, and have won the last six Ligue 1 meetings between the two sides so we’re expecting them to maintain their dominance.

The hosts have an impressive record at the back with 12 clean sheets in their last 15 games but Nantes have scored in eight of their last nine away games and managed a goal in each of their meetings with Monaco last season, so we feel a 3-1 win for Monaco has some appeal in the correct score market.
