Reason For Manchester City vs Chelsea Betting Tips
Manchester City’s crumbling title defence
Manchester City’s defence of the Premier League title took another major blow before the international break as the champions were outclassed by a Liverpool team that look destined to lift the trophy, but they will be hoping to get back to winning ways on Saturday.
It’s fair to say that things haven’t gone overly well for The Citizens this season, with shock defeats to Norwich and Wolves precluding this more expected loss at the hands of Liverpool. They find themselves 4th in the Premier League now, some nine points adrift of the top spot holders and a point behind both Chelsea and Leicester. Defeat on Saturday would leave their title hopes teetering on the brink of extinction at a very early stage in the season.
Lampard’s young guns making waves
Chelsea are a side on the rise too. The Blues, led by club legend Frank Lampard, looked like they would be in for a rocky ride back in August as they were thrashed 4-0 by Manchester United, but things have drastically improved since then.
Lampard’s focus on using the extensive collection of young players at his disposal has paid off, and their 2-0 win over Palace last time out made it six league wins on the bounce. It is, however, worth noting that Chelsea have lost both of their ties with fellow Big Six opposition and have dropped points in all four meetings with the current Premier League top seven.
Glaring defensive problems for both sides
Chelsea’s problem quite clearly stems from the back. Their open style of play leaves a sub-par defence exposed, and the result has been 17 goals conceded in 12 league matches. This gets even worse when away from home, where they have shipped an average of two goals per game.
Manchester City aren’t exactly stalwart at the back right now, and the injury to Aymeric Laporte certainly isn’t helping things. Fernandinho has been deputising at centre back, resulting in just two clean sheets from their last six matches.
Pep Guardiola’s attacking form cannot be questioned though, and despite their relatively poor start they still lead the goalscoring charts with 35 goals scored in 12 games. We could be in for a cracker of a match on Saturday night.
Indeed, half of Manchester City’s home league games this term have seen at least four goals scored, and all but one of Chelsea’s away games have ended the same way. Considering this, backing Over 3.5 Goals looks a great choice.
Chelsea could be in for a couple of goals themselves too as they face a Man City side that have conceded two or more goals on four occasions this season. However, Chelsea’s defensive record is a major concern, and with City bagging an average of 3.16 goals per game at the Etihad we think a 3-2 win for the hosts is good value.
Home win: 1.47
Away win: 6.35
Over 2.5 goals: 1.41
Under 2.5 goals: 2.93
