  • Chelsea kept West Ham off the scoresheet in each EPL meeting last season.
  • West Ham were beaten in five of their last six league games.

No continental hangover expected for Chelsea

Chelsea and West Ham lock horns in a Premier League London derby at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in a contest that Frank Lampard’s Blues will expect to win with relative comfort.

Having come through a pulsating end-to-end draw with Valencia in mid-week, Lampard might have feared an energy-sapping fallout from his team’s rigorous test in Spain, however, luckily for Chelsea, they probably won’t have to be fully firing on all cylinders to see off a dreadfully out of form West Ham outfit this weekend.

Chelsea’s tie with Valencia on Wednesday served to prolong what has been a bumpy patch for the Blues, who have now won only two of their last six games in all competitions.

However, having won each of their last three Premier League games at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea should be armed with enough home-patch momentum to turn West Ham over on Saturday.

West Ham on the slide

The Irons have to endure a dreadful couple of months, and their run of five defeats and two draws in seven Premier League fixtures has pushed manager Manuel Pellegrini out as one of the favourites to be the next manager sacked in the division.

Last weekend, West Ham became the first Premier League team to lose a home match against Tottenham Hotspur since January, and away from home the Hammers are winless in four matches, losing the most recent two to nil against Everton and Burnley respectively.

West Ham’s lack of cutting edge on their travels has developed into a problem priority for Pellegrini, and ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge, the Irons failed to register in three of their last four away assignments overall.

Chelsea’s defensive improvements at Stamford Bridge

In contrast, Chelsea will be out to secure their fourth successive Premier League clean sheet at home this weekend, and we’re backing the Blues to get it.

Along with their impressive run of shutouts at Stamford Bridge, it’s worth noting that Chelsea kept West Ham out in each of the teams’ Premier League encounters last season, and with the Irons attacking edge looking worryingly blunt, we think there is value in backing the Blues to win to nil again on Saturday.

Alongside our Chelsea win to nil forecast, we’re tipping the Blues to win 3-1 for our correct score prediction. To compound their misery up front, West Ham’s defensive performances have also been deteriorating, and the Irons shipped 3.0 goals in each of their last three Premier League outings.

Free-scoring Chelsea have already scored three or more goals in six separate games this season, and we think the Blues should enjoy themselves against a completely out of sorts West Ham outfit on Saturday.
