Reason For Chelsea vs Southampton Betting Tips

  • Chelsea sit 4th in the Premier League with a four point cushion on 5th place Sheffield United after their win at Spurs.
  • Chelsea have won four of their last six home games in the Premier League.
  • Southampton have scored in each of their last eight Premier League away days, but have kept just two clean sheets on the road this season.
  • Southampton have conceded exactly two goals in four of their last six away games in the league, including 2-1 losses to both Spurs and Man City.

Chelsea confidence boosted after masterclass at Spurs

Chelsea may have been in poor form over the last month or so, but Frank Lampard put on a tactical masterclass on Sunday as he outwitted his former boss Jose Mourinho to beat Spurs 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That result, following on from four defeats in their previous five league matches, will have done wonders for Chelsea’s confidence. They were clear and deserved winners, and you get the feeling that it could be the start of another extended run of good form.

It’s a mark of Lampard’s potential that, even after their recent poor form, they still sit 4th in the table despite the loss of Eden Hazard, the summer transfer ban and the fact they have fielded a large amount of unproven youngsters this season.

Saints weather the storm to show improvements

Southampton fans have had some tough times this season, most notably their horrendous 9-0 drubbing at home to Leicester back in October. That was part of a sustained eight match winless streak in the Premier League, but despite all these setbacks Ralph Hasenhuttl has slowly started to improve this team.

The Saints’ 3-1 win at Aston Villa on Saturday made it three wins from their last five games, leaving them three points clear of the relegation zone and most definitely heading in the right direction.

Hasenhuttl instills attacking belief into Southampton

That victory at Villa Park also ended a run of five winless games away from home, but the fact is that it will be very difficult for them to build on that at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have won four of their last six Premier League games at home and have won eight of their last nine meetings with Southampton.

While they may not get a win, we are expecting them to give the Chelsea defence a challenge. Southampton have scored in every away game since the opening weekend of the season in the Premier League, and they’re coming up against a Chelsea defence with just three clean sheets in nine home league games to their name.

Chelsea have only failed to score twice at home as well, so with Southampton conceding in seven of their nine away days we think backing Both Teams to Score is a good option. In the end, we’re expecting a Chelsea win though. The visitors have conceded exactly two goals in four of their last six on the road, including against the likes of Spurs, Man City and Arsenal. The former two of those games ended 2-1 to the hosts, so backing a 2-1 win for Chelsea is attractive.
