Conclusion Chelsea - Manchester United

Chelsea face United test

Manchester United head to Chelsea on Sunday in what seems set to be Michael Carrick’s final game in temporary charge of the first team.

Ralf Rangnick is set to take the reins for the remainder of the season but he won’t be in the dugout at Stamford Bridge, in what will be a huge test for the underperforming Red Devils.

United did manage a win over Villarreal in the Champions League in midweek but Chelsea are a different prospect altogether.

The Blues do have a few injury concerns and key midfielder N’Golo Kante seems set to sit this one out after picking up a knee injury in the midweek win over Juventus.

Ben Chilwell is out and Kai Havertz is a doubt with a thigh issue but it is United have the greater selection issues. Harry Maguire is suspended for the visitors, fellow defender Raphael Varane is set to miss a fourth consecutive game through injury, while Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani are also concerns.

Chelsea too strong for United

United clearly have plenty of quality within their squad, but Chelsea are a well drilled team who are incredibly tough to break down and they should be able to pick up all three points here. Thomas Tuchel’s men humbled Juventus 4-0 in the Champions League in midweek and won 3-0 at Leicester in their last league outing.

The Blues were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley in their last home game but should really have put that match to bed before the Clarets equalised late on. We may well see some reaction from the United players in their first league game since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit, but Chelsea are so strong right now anything other than a home win would still register as a surprise.

Clean sheet specialists can keep another shut out

Goals haven’t necessarily been the issue for United and they have the fifth best attack in the league with 20 goals in 12 games. However, they have come up short when faced with top opposition – drawing blanks in defeats to both Liverpool (5-0) and Manchester City (2-0) – and Chelsea boast the best defence in the Premier League by some distance.
